The Basset Hound is French breed of dog that's famous for its unique physicality because it possesses short legs long limbs droopy eyes flappy elongated ears. As seen in many paintings sculptures the Basset is favorite of many French people because they are often depicted cuddling or surrounded by this breed. Before being known all over the world the Basset firstly became popular in its native country France was appreciated by many French people.

This breed has an excellent sense of smell this gift was often used by hunters in small game hunting. Intentionally bred to have osteochondrodysplasia or dwarfism the Basset is perfect hunter of small creatures inside holes burrows. It is amazing to think that despite its shortness the Basset can actually reach taller heights such as table tops however due to its heavy body short legs it cannot keep itself afloat in the water therefore owners should be careful not to allow this creature to swim.

In the olden days the Basset was used largely for hunting purposes. But today this breed is only limited to show ring competitions dog sports family companionship. Good thing is that some group wishes to bring back the use of this breed as a hunter so they organized hunting groups such as The American Hunting Basset Association.

This breed is amazingly talented in terms of whining too because whenever it does whine it seems to imitate "talking". Its talking sound gets higher louder when it not being paid attention to for a long time. Additionally the Basset seems an enthusiastic participant of training lessons only if there were treats given as a reward.

Cute adorable the Basset may seem but the low hanging ears drooping eyes have disadvantages sometimes lead to a fatal risk. The drooping eyes of the Basset cause mucus to build up under the eyeballs this collects dirt bacteria causing the eyes to get infected. Its ears that are dangling freely to the ground in food may catch or develop chronic diseases some are potentially fatal.

The Basset commonly weighs 50 to 65 pounds stands 12 to 15 inches is heavier in bone mass than any other breed of dog. Its coat is short hard shiny but sheds excessively all year round. This dog is generally colored in tricolor a combination of black tan white red spots white solid red with white feet tail honey white lemon white.

Around children the Basset makes a wonderful playmate for it sweet gentle playful devoted. It does not attack strangers too is perfectly attached to the family that owns it. As a devoted family protector the Basset howls or barks at pending negative vibes such as an incoming storm or sometimes it may do this to simply imply that it needs something.

The name Basset came form French word bas meaning short. The parent breed of this breed is said to be the Bloodhound Artisien Normand Basset Artisien Normand a couple of French dog breeds that are existent to this day. The Basset became popular through the portraits of Emperor Napoleon III as the portraits are said to depict the royal being surrounded by his glorious Basset Hound pets.
