Applying Decoupage to An Article The Correct Way . . . by Anna Meenaghan
Decoupage now seems to be fashionable It is used to cover plant pots suitcases boxes vases bottles even candlesticks to great effect. We often come across it in gift shops whilst we are looking for presents between the canvas art candles knick knacks etc.
This if truth be told is not an expensive pastime except you do need a degree of patience for this As soon as you have grasped the theory there are limitless bits pieces that you could really cover. Therefore with the many delightful papers that you can use for this it possible to use pictures like you see on art posters representing times from another era.
Luckily enough inside craft shops they do sell some lovely sheets especially for this. Otherwise you could cut up Christmas or birthday cards magazine pictures or else I imagine even snaps of your pets or relatives
If it terracotta or wood clean your item in the first place make sure that it dry before you carry on. At first you will need to accumulate your cut outs then shuffle them about to make up your work. Right now pick a suitable colour for the background of your object give it a layer of acrylic paint.
Should you be using an open kind of object for example a bowl this will require painting both inside out. At this point be tolerant situate it somewhere to become dry where it will not accumulate dust. In the meantime mix up a bowl of some normal household wallpaper adhesive. We have right now arrived at the tricky bit
You can at this point use a narrow household paintbrush say about an inch wide to carefully paste your cut out pieces on the back of them then firmly attach them to your object. When you set on every piece conscientiously use an old rag to press it down give it a wipe over.
Depending on how large your cut outs are I would almost certainly paste larger cut outs on primarily. Allocate plenty of time for these to dry totally. Therefore in this example I would in any case give it a day. As soon as you have reached this point you must now spread over a glaze of polyurethane to your handiwork.
Should your piece is garden tub with an inside to it which is wide open paint the interior part first. Next leave it to dry yet again over night. The next day you can pick up again polyurethane the outer surface. Right away you can cleanse your paint brush by means of some mineral spirit.
Your next move is to use a somewhat darker color of paint to encompass your article equally inside as well as out. On the other hand before this really dries use a piece of kitchen roll to get the paint off enabling your cut outs to gleam through. Leave overnight
The next day you can draw on your polyurethane yet again to put on yet a further coat on top of the whole of your chosen article.
